Beautiful Clean Green Schools
The project "Beautiful Clean Green Schools (BECLEGS)" strives to connect, inspire and collaborate with young change makers to build thriving, just and sustainable ways of life for all. It provides children with experience and leadership opportunities in the enviro-health field. Sound and quality education can only be given in a clean and healthy environment and dreams of such an environment can only be realized via BECLEGS. BECLEGS thus is a pathway to a brighter, greener, healthier, and more sustainable future. BECLEGS beautifies by planting flowers and flower trees; cleans by clearing bushes and picking up waste for proper waste disposal and greens by planting flora. Beauty plus cleaning plus greening in a school produces a "Beautiful Clean Green School."
BECLEGS addresses climate change via environmental education and planting of flora (flowers, tree flowers and trees) that curbs Climate Change and favors insect and bird life, hence favor biodiversity conservation. Why flowers, tree flowers and trees? This is because, while fostering biodiversity conservation and curbing Climate Change, the flowers beautify the environment, meanwhile the trees like the umbrella tree provides shade for the pupils on sunny days hence mitigate the impacts of climate change.
BECLEGS also deletes ignorance of global environmental issues and deposits sustainable environmental knowledge hence, nurtures the spirit of environmentalism in the pupils of the schools and communities around them. Picking waste and clearing of bushes in and around the environment makes the environment look clean, beautiful and creates safe and enjoyable space for all hence solves the problem of a harmful, dangerous and unsustainable learning environments.
The establishment of Green clubs in schools solves the problem of lack of enviro-health clubs in schools whereas enviro-health education addresses environmental health, and hygiene and sanitation issues in schools
As such, BECLEGS is a very important project to us, schools, local communities and the global community.
Firstly, addresses a lot of environmental and health problems children face and fosters a culture of life that awakens the spirit of environmentalism in children; hence build a more sustainable greener and healthier environment by children for the global community. The project actively engages children in the fight against Climate Change and unsustainable enviro-health practices. It is also very important because it provides children with leadership skills at a tender age. Moreover, the project provides a safe, enjoyable, beautiful, clean and green environment for all. Furthermore, the project is also important because it brings out and nurtures the hidden talents in children via games like green football, quizzes, essays, drama, singing, etc.
Finally, the project is a typical example of a project that promotes education in every aspect and that is why the project is very important to us, children and the world at large.
Project Launching
It was under the blue skies on a sunny Friday that The Greens launched BECLEGS with the organization of clean up under the theme "Communities caring for Nature" during the Clean Up the World Weekend (17th - 19th September 2010). BECLEGS was launched in Gratitude Bilingual Nursery and Primary School (GBNPS) and its environs in Mile 3 Nkwen - Bamenda. Activities marking this event included Environmental Education reaching approximately 400 pupils of GBNPS, Environmental sensitization campaign reaching approximately 1500 people around the school locality, Waste management, grass cutting, planting of trees, award of prizes to some outstanding "green fingers" of the institution and the establishment of Gratitude Green Club - GGC to continue caring for nature. As such, Gratitude Bilingual Nursery and Primary School is the pioneer beneficiary of the project - BECLEGS.
From GBNPS, The Greens via BECLEGS has as ultimate goal, the transformation of all schools into Beautiful Clean Green Schools; hence establish a culture of life where communities care for nature, clean up, fix up and conserve their environment; thus paint the World green.
